MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Pioneer men's basketball team lost to St. Martin's University 73-69 in the second day of the Western Oregon Shootout on Saturday.
The Pioneers are 2-2 for the season while the Saints are 1-3 overall.
A pair of three-pointers by
Jacari Whitfield gave the Pioneers a 63-57 advantage with 5:53 left in the second half.
Brok Pendleton hit a jumper with 1:42 remaining as the Saints went on an 11-2 run to take a 68-65 lead.
Jason Smith hit a lay-up to trim the Saints lead to 68-67 advantage with 1:29 left.
A three-pointer by Ryan Votaw with 28 seconds left and two free throws in the final 20 seconds secured the victory for the Saints.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 10-2 lead early in the first half on a three-pointer by Smith.
Jurrell Turner made a lay-up with 9:06 remaining as the Pioneers maintained an eight-point lead (24-16).
St. Martin's tied the game 38-38 on a pair of free throws by Roger O'Neill with 1:04 remaining.
The Pioneers took a 38-36 advantage with 44 seconds left on a jumper by
Adam Watts.
Smith hit his fourth 3-pointer as time expired in the first half to give the Pioneers a five point lead.
For the game, the Pioneers shot 36 percent from the field and were outrebounded by a 52-23 margin. Turner led the Pioneers in scoring with 15 points followed by Smith with 14. Cal State East Bay leading scorer
