HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneer men's soccer team lost to Cal State Monterey Bay 3-1 on Sunday.

“We had a very positive start to the match and controlled the tempo early,” Pioneer coach Andy Cumbo said.  “We created a nice goal early on, and then hit the cross bar shortly after, and then was turned away by their goalkeeper on a goal we should have put in. If we execute and continue to control the tempo, we make the game easier to manage.”

In the seventh minute, the Pioneers' Florian Reppin had his shot hit the crossbar.

The Otters' George Plakorus had a shot go wide in the 14th minute.

A minute later, Javier Martin scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season to give the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage. Tyler Andersen was credited with the assist.

Cal State East Bay continued the pressure as Andersen had a shot go wide in the 25th minute.

The Otters had a goal taken away in the 27th minute on an off-sides call.

Cal State Monterey Bay got off three shots in the next three minutes, but was unable to put the ball in the net.

Beau Villanueva converted a penalty kick in the 32nd minute as the Otters tied the match.

In the 42nd minute, the Pioneers' Daniel Borst picked off a pass and was one-on-one with Otter goalkeeper Cory Calder. Borst shot was blocked by Calder at the last second.

Servando Perez popped into the air and put the ball past Pioneer goalkeeper Patrick Gilbertson in the 46th minute to put the Otters ahead 2-1.

The Pioneers responded by putting pressure on the Otter defense.

Martin had a header go wide and followed with a shot saved by Calder in the 61st minute.

Nine minutes later, Martin had another shot saved by Calder.

Dylan Niven secured the victory for the Otters with a goal in the 85th minute.

Cal State Monterey Bay, which improved to 5-4-1 in CCAA play and 5-5-1 overall, out-shot Cal State East Bay (1-9 CCAA, 2-10) by a 15-8 margin.

Martin had four shots while goalkeeper Bryce Bookhamer had three saves in the first half. The Pioneers received outstanding play from defenders Robin Patton and Steve Belalcazar.

“Even though we had the majority of the ball during the game, we gave up two unnecessary goals,” Cumbo said.  “We need to continue to work on managing the match, especially against a team like Cal State Monterey Bay.”

Cal State East Bay will host Humboldt State on October 14 at 7 p.m.
