HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneer men's soccer team sported new uniforms and played a solid match for 90 minutes in defeating San Francisco State 2-0 in the Battle of the Bay on Friday night.
With the victory, the Pioneers (1-8) win their first CCAA match of the season. Cal State East Bay is 2-9 for the season.
“We surprised the team with the new red and white stripe uniforms tonight,” Pioneer coach
Andy Cumbo said. “The guys have worked really hard and paid their dues on game over the past few weeks. This win and shutout tonight is a sign of their commitment and their pride in wearing the CSUEB jersey. We had a really strong week in training and I'm proud of the guys.”
The Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a beautiful goal in the 6th minute of the match.
Javier Martin scored his team leading fourth goal on a header with an assist by
Tyler Andersen and
Andres Ponce.
Both teams played on even terms the following eight minutes of the match.
San Francisco State put up three shots in the next eight minutes, but was unable to score.
Martin had two shots go wide in the 33rd and 35th minutes.
A header by the Gators' Jorge Valadas was saved by Pioneer goalkeeper
Bryce Bookhamer in the 40th minute.
Martin had his fourth shot of the game go wide in the 50th minute as the Pioneers maintained their slim lead.

Patrick Gilbertson turned away a shot by Juan Sanchez in the 53rd minute.
For the next 33 minutes, both teams played tough on defense as only five shots were taken.
Cal State East Bay secured the victory in the 86th minute as
Tyler Webster came into the match and scored his first goal of the season. Ponce, who played a solid match, was credited with his second assist of the match.
The Pioneers received good production from goalkeepers Bookhamer and Gilbertson who combined for a shutout. Bookhamer had three saves while Gilbertson turned away a shot in the second half.
“The athletic training staff has done an excellent job with us and tonight we had majority of our injured players on the field,” Cumbo said. “We had a good amount of people in the stands and which added to a great environment. The whole program stepped up and contributed tonight and earned a big win. We're looking forward to playing Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday.”
