SANTA ROSA, Calif. – A stellar final round from
Andrea Castellanos helped lead the Cal State East Bay women's golf team to a third-place showing at the Sonoma State Invitational on Tuesday at the par-73 Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club. The Pioneers carded their second consecutive top-five finish to open the fall campaign and had three players place in the top half of the 43-player field.
East Bay topped all of the other local teams, including both Sonoma State's A and B squads, Cal State Monterey Bay and Chico State. The Pioneers finished with a team total of 635 (+51) to finish seven strokes ahead of the Seawolves' top team, 16 strokes ahead of the Wildcats and topped the Otters by 21 strokes, marking the second time in program history they have topped Monterey Bay.
Castellanos had an excellent final day at the tournament, carding a two-under 71 to take 10 strokes off her Monday score. The sophomore finished with a 152 (+6) to tie with Cal State Monterey Bay's Elisse Van Duesen for fourth overall. Tuesday's 71 was the best score among all players in the second round and tied for the tournament's lowest round. The 71 and her total 152 both set new career bests for Castellanos, who led the Pioneers for the third time in her career and notched her second highest individual finish at East Bay.
Cal State East Bay's first-round leader,
Deanna Tyndall, was just four strokes back of Castellanos at 156 (+10), to finish ninth overall after carding a two-over 75 in the opening round. Freshman
Linda Brown rounded out the Pioneers in the top-20, posting a 161 (+15) to finish 17th overall.
Arielle Swan-Smith finished five strokes back of Brown, taking two strokes off her opening-round 84 to tie for 25th after carding a 166 (+20).
Katie Devine capped the Cal State East Bay contingent with a 173 (+27) to finish 33rd overall.
Western Washington claimed the team title with a 29-over 613 to finish 11 strokes ahead of British Columbia. The Vikings also claimed the individual medalist honors as Claire Ranchor tied with British Columbia's Kylie Barros for first place, each garnering a final total of 148 (+2). Both teams had three players finish in the top 10 individually, while BCU came in 11 strokes ahead of the Pioneers to claim runner up status.
Cal State East Bay will cap the fall campaign next week, when it travels to the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate, hosted by Hawaii – Hilo. The Pioneers will take to the Waikoloa Beach Course in Hilo, Oct. 31-Nov. 1.
