CORNING, Calif. - Playing in its second tournament of the fall season, the Cal State East Bay men's golf team placed seventh at the Lindsay Olive Wildcat Classic on Tuesday. The Pioneers placed three players in the top 25 at the event that saw 16 teams and 77 individuals compete at the Sevillano Links in Corning, Calif.

Newcomer Chriz Herzog had a successful first tournament with Cal State East Bay, posting a pair of two-over rounds to finish with a three-round score of 226 (+10) and tie for 13th with Chico State's Bobby Bucey. After carding a 78 in the second round, Herzog finished strong with his second 74 of the tournament on Tuesday.

Not far behind was fellow newcomer A.J. Maxedon, who completed his first appearance as a Pioneer with an 11-over 227 to finish tied for 15th overall. Maxedon got better with each round, improving six strokes in the second round before carding a team-low 73 (+1) to cap the tournament. A.J. Warren joined Herzog and Maxedon in the top 25 of the 77-player field, also picking up with each successive round. Warren carded an opening-round 80 before dropping five strokes to come in at three-over 75 in the second round and post a 74 (+24) to finish out the tournament in a tie for 21st with a total of 229 (+13).

Justin Tambunting took 10 strokes off his first-round score to post a 79 (+7) in the second round and finished tied for 66th with a 251 (+35). Blake Ahlin rounded out the Pioneer contingent in 71st place, improving nine strokes from the second to third round to finish with a 254 (+38).

Though East Bay was sitting in third through two rounds, the top six squads each had at least one player shoot one-over or better in the final round. Cal State East Bay finished with a final score of 923 (+59), but shot a 304 on the final day, its lowest team total of the tournament. Despite the competitive third round, the Pioneers topped three CCAA teams in UC San Diego, Sonoma State and Cal State San Bernardino in the tournament.

The host Wildcats claimed the tournament title, finishing 20 strokes ahead of Grand Canyon and leading from start to finish. Chico State posted a team total of 894 (+30) to best Grand Canyon by 20 strokes. The Antelopes finished just three strokes ahead of Cal State Stanislaus and Western Washington, which tied for third at 917 (+53). Hawaii-Hilo claimed fifth with a 56-over 920, while Dixie State just edged the Pioneers by one stroke to take sixth with a 922 (+58). East Bay also beat eighth-place St. Martin's by nine strokes.

Chico State's Kyle Souza, the 2011 NCAA Division II Individual Champion, took medalist honors, posting a tournament-low one-under 71 in the first round and finishing with a 220 (+4). Two strokes back of Souza, Hawaii-Hilo's Travis Russell placed second, while Grand Canyon's Ryan Mahoney rounded out the top three.

Cal State East Bay will return to action on Oct. 30, when it travels to the Big Island of Hawaii for the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate, hosted by Hawaii-Hilo at the Waikoloa King Course. Last year, the Pioneers finished tied for sixth, led by Jeff Cornez' four-over 220 to tie for 14th overall.
