ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - A solid second half enabled the Pioneer men's basketball team to win their first CCAA game of the season, 69-53, over Sonoma State on January 29.
The victory snaps an 11-game losing streak and gives the Pioneers a 1-13 CCAA record and a 3-15 season mark. Sonoma State drops to 5-9 in CCAA play and 7-11 overall.
Trailing by six points entering the second half, the Pioneers tied the game 33-33 on
Roshun Wynne's three point basket at the 15:15 mark.
With the score tied 37-37, the Pioneers put together their best stretch of basketball of the season going on a 15-0 run highlighted by
Will Freedman's six points and a pair of layups by
Jared Waters.
Freedman converted three consecutive 3-pointers to give the Pioneers their biggest lead of the game, 61-40, with 5:27 remaining.
Two free throws by
Adam Watts with 14 seconds gave the Pioneers their 48th point of the second half and first conference victory of the season.
“We created numerous offensive opportunities off our defense,” Pioneer coach Will Biggs said. “In the second half, we established a presence on the court and made our shots.”
For the game, the Pioneers hit 9-of-17 three-pointers and outrebounded the Seawolves by a 35-29 margin.
Freedman led the Pioneers in scoring with 18 points including four 3-pointers.
Mark Samuels followed with 15 points and had a team-best eight rebounds. Wynne scored 14 points, all in the second half.
Donavon Jackson,
Adam Watts, and
Rodrigue Maza, with a pair of three-pointers, all contributed to the Pioneer win with six points.
“This was our best week of practice,” Biggs said. “The guys are working hard. This team is fun to coach.”
The Pioneers will play their homecoming games against Cal State Monterey Bay on February 3 and San Francisco State on February 5.
Patrick Scott led Sonoma State with 10 points followed by Matthew French with nine.
