ARCATA, Calif. - The Pioneer men's basketball team played hard throughout in a 78-67 setback to Humboldt State on January 27.
Following the defeat, the Pioneers are 0-13 in CCAA play and 2-15 overall. Humboldt State remains in second place in the CCAA at 12-2 and improves to 15-2 for the season.
Humboldt State, which played without leading scorer Brian Morris, held a 24-17 advantage with 7:55 remaining in the first half.
Mark Samuels' ninth point of the first half cut the Lumberjacks lead to 27-26 at the 3:40 mark.
Brandon Sperling scored his 14th point of the first half with 2:02 left to extend the Lumberjacks' lead to 31-28. A basket by Kyle Baxter gave the Lumberjacks a 33-28 advantage at halftime.
Humboldt State jumped out to a 47-38 lead in the second half at the 14:11 mark. The Pioneers battled back and cut the Lumberjacks' lead to 49-47 with 11:58 left.
Randy Hunter's 24 point of the game enabled Humboldt State to take a 68-57 advantage with 3:48 remaining in the second half. The Pioneers came within 74-67 with 17 seconds left, but the Lumberjacks scored the last four points to notch their 10th victory in their last 11 games. Samuels and
Roshun Wynne accounted for 29 of 39 second half points for the Pioneers.
For the game, East Bay scored 28 field goals compared to 23 for Humboldt State. The Lumberjacks won the game from the free throw line as they converted 29-of-52 attempts while the Pioneers made 9- of- 16 shots.
The Pioneers did a good job on the boards as they out rebounded the Lumberjacks by a 44-36 margin.
East Bay was led by Samuels who tallied a game-high 25 points and completed a double-double with 10 rebounds. Wynne followed with 18 points while
Donavon Jackson added 10.
The Lumberjacks had three players score in double figures led by Hunter with 24 points. Hunter recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds. Sperling and Ernie Spada scored 17 and 16 points respectively.
The Pioneers will play at Sonoma State on January 29. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
