Cross country runner Israel Sotelo has been selected as Cal State East Bay's Male Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Doubletree Hilton Pleasanton at the Club, for Sept. 3-6.

Competing in his first collegiate race at Saturday's San Francisco Invitational, Sotelo posted the fastest 8k time by a Pioneer freshman since the program was resurrected in 2009. The Porterville native completed the course at Golden Gate Park in 27:06.1.

He placed 56th overall in a field of 120 runners, approximately half of whom were from Division I programs. Among Division II runners, Sotelo finished in third place.
