Senior Ryan Kochan has been named Cal State East Bay's Male Athlete of the Week for Feb. 9-15. The third baseman led the Pioneer baseball team to a 3-1 series victory over Academy of Art in the season's opening weekend, pacing an East Bay offense that out-scored the Urban Knights 30-12.Â
Kochan was the offensive star for the Pioneers on Saturday, going 4-for-8 with six RBI and eight total bases in the doubleheader. He blasted his first career home run in the morning game, a grand slam into the trees beyond left field that broke the game open for the Pioneers in the fourth inning.Â
The San Ramon native was on base twice in Sunday's series finale, going 1-for-3 with a walk, RBI, and run scored. For the series, he led East Bay with seven RBI, a .438 on-base percentage and .643 slugging. Kochan also turned in tellar defense at third base, handling all nine chances he saw flawlessly.
