Matt Guzman joined the Pioneer coaching staff in 2020 after spending seven seasons as they head volleyball coach at James Logan High School in nearby Union City. A Bay Area native, Matt founded UC ELITE Volleyball Club (Hayward, CA) in 2014 to bring high level and affordable volleyball opportunities to the Tri City Area. Most recently leading the 2019 UC ELITE 16-1 team for a BID to the USAV Girls Junior National Championships.
Guzman's coaching career began at James Logan High School in 2012 where he first took over the Boys/Girls Volleyball Program. During his 7 seasons coaching Women's Varsity at James Logan, he led the Lady Colts to five consecutive Undefeated MVAL league titles (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019), NCS Division 1 Finals appearance in 2017, CIF Nor-Cal Division 1 Championship in 2017 (1st in school history), a CIF Division 1 State Finals appearance in 2017 (1st in school history) and most recently a NCS Division 1 Championship in 2018 (1st in 26 years). Many of his boys' and girls' athletes have gone on to earn multiple League, Section, and All State honors. Guzman completed his high school coaching career with overall record of 199-66, winning over 75% of his games.
He currently resides in Fremont, CA with his wife Taryn and two kids Tristan and Lia.
