Former Ohlone College and James Logan High School coach Will Biggs is entering his 15th year as head coach of the Pioneers and third year in the CCAA in 2011-12.
During the final season of the transition to Division II, Biggs guided the team through a rebuilding period. Despite any struggles, the Pioneers ranked in the top half of the conference in steals and turnover ratio. In addition, three Pioneer players ranked in the top 30 in the CCAA in scoring, led by Mark Samuels' 14.3 points per game. Samuels also ranked seventh in the league in steals, while Roshun Wynne was second in steals and Will Freedman was one of the top three-point shooters in the conference. Under Biggs' watch, Freedman capped an impressive five years at East Bay in 2010-11, finishing ranked in the career top 10 in scoring, field goal percentage and rebounding.
In the Pioneers first season competing against Division II competition in 2009-10, Biggs led the team to six victories, including three wins over CCAA opponents. With Biggs' guidance, East Bay finished the season among the league leaders in offensive rebounding and assists. Under Biggs' watch, Jun Uchida ranked in the top 10 in assists and freshman guard Mark Samuels ranked in the top 25 in scoring and top 15 in steals. The team also had two players earn CCAA All-Academic honors.
Biggs guided the 2008-09 Pioneers to the Cal Pac Conference Championship and an appearance in the NAIA Championships. Cal State East Bay finished 19-8 for the season and appeared in Cal PacConference post-season play for the 10th consecutive year.
Cal State East Bay finished the 2005-06 campaign with a record of 17-9. Nationally, Cal State East Bay led the NAIA II in steals (12.8) and turnover margin (7.1). The Pioneers were second in scoring offense (89.6 ppg). Cal State East Bay set three school records for most points in a game (149), most field goals in a game (67), and field goal percentage in a contest (.736 FG%). During the 2004-05 season, Biggs became the all-time winningest men’s basketball coach at Cal State East Bay with his 138th victory. The 2004-05 Pioneers finished the season with a 19-9 record and came within one game of reaching the NAIA Nationals for the fifth time in the last seven years. During the 2004-05 campaign, the Pioneers set 12 school records.
Biggs led the 2003-04 Pioneer men’s basketball team to a 19-10 record and a fourth appearance in the NAIA National Championships. During the 2002-03 season, Cal State East Bay captured the Cal Pac Tournament title and appeared in NAIA post-season play for the third time. During the 1999-2000 campaign, the Pioneers won 20 games for the second straight year at 20-9 and won the Cal Pac Conference post-season tournament.
During the 1998-99 season, the Pioneers concluded their most successful season since the 1996-97 campaign with a 22-6 record and were co-champions of the Cal Pac Conference with an 18-2 mark. Cal State East Bay earned its first post-season appearance since 1987-88.
Biggs served as head coach of Ohlone College from 1995-97. Much of Biggs’ success came at James Logan High School where he coached from 1982-92. Biggs guided the Colts to five Mission Valley Athletic league titles and three straight NorCal Finals.
Biggs received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from UC Santa Barbara in 1978 and his master’s in physical education from Cal State Hayward in 1988.
