Wayne Hunter enters his first season as an assistant coach for Pioneer men's basketball in 2014-15. Hunter played four seasons at Saint Mary's College and was a member of the program's first West Coast Conference Tournament Championship team. Two of his Gael squads qualified for the NCAA Division I Tournament, including a run to the Sweet Sixteen his senior year.
A native of Sacramento, Hunter played in 96 games at SMC and averaged 11.0 points and 3.0 rebounds as a senior. After graduating in 2010, he spent one year as the head JV coach and varsity assistant at Richmond High School, followed by two years as the JV head coach and varsity assistant at Oakland Technical High School. Hunter spent three years teaching social studies and physical education and mentoring in the after-school program at Saint Martin de Porres Catholic School, and he has also worked as a personal trainer for the last two years.Â
