CHICO, Calif. — Cal State East Bay women's soccer opened CCAA play Friday evening with a 1-0 loss to Chico State at University Soccer Stadium.
The teams played through a scoreless opening half, with East Bay generating five shots to Chico State's four.
Taylor Hodges created the Pioneers' first opportunity in the 11th minute, putting a shot on goal. Lillian Morris, Jenna McDonnell and Zeena Grewal also generated attempts for East Bay during the opening 45 minutes.
Bianca Avila made the start in goal and kept the Wildcats off the board in the first half, making a save in the 41st minute to send the match into halftime scoreless.
Chico State increased its offensive pressure early in the second half before breaking through in the 55th minute. Baylee Gregerson delivered a cross from the left side that Yulisa Reyes headed into the net to give the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage.
East Bay looked for an equalizer over the final 35 minutes. Hodges created the Pioneers' best opportunity in the 76th minute, putting a shot on target that was kept out by a team save. She added another attempt two minutes later, but the Pioneers were unable to find the tying goal.
Hodges led East Bay with four shots, including two on goal. The Pioneers finished with eight shots and two on target, while Chico State recorded 14 shots with seven on goal.
Yvette Torres played the second half in goal and recorded five saves. Avila finished with one save in the opening 45 minutes as the East Bay goalkeepers combined for six saves.
Cal State East Bay moves to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in CCAA play.
