ARCATA, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team battled throughout Sunday's CCAA matchup but came up just short in a 1-0 loss to Cal Poly Humboldt at College Creek Field. The result moved the Pioneers to 1-5-0 overall and 0-2-0 in conference play.
Cal Poly Humboldt scored what proved to be the deciding goal in the 11th minute when Lucy Al-Chokhachy found the back of the net. East Bay responded by creating several opportunities throughout the remainder of the first half, putting four shots on goal before the break.
The Pioneers continued to push for the equalizer in the second half. Kella Folkerts, Jenna McDonnell and Maya Gutierrez-Zamudio each put shots on frame, but East Bay was unable to break through.
East Bay finished the match with nine shots, placing seven on goal, while Cal Poly Humboldt recorded 11 shots with four on target. McDonnell led the Pioneers with four shots, including two on goal, while Folkerts added two shots on frame. Both teams finished with three corner kicks.
Bianca Avila played the opening 45 minutes in goal for East Bay and made one save. Yvette Torres took over in the second half and recorded two saves while keeping Humboldt off the board over the final 45 minutes.
Despite creating opportunities throughout the match and keeping the pressure on late, the Pioneers were unable to find the equalizer as Humboldt held on for the 1-0 decision.
