STOCKTON, Calif. – Cooper Groshart, Oscar Blomqvist and Peyton Hendricks provided the perfect start for Cal State East Bay in the final round of the NCAA Division II Men's Golf West/South Central Regional Tournament with respective birdies on the 353-yard par 4 first hole. Easton Hether and Paddy Blinderman opened their rounds with pars as the Pioneers quickly built early momentum.
Groshart finished the opening nine holes at 2-under after recording back-to-back birdies on Nos. 1 and 2, followed by another on No. 6. Outside of a minor blemish on No. 7 when he posted a 5 on the par-4 hole, he was one of two Pioneers who entered the back nine under par.
Hether was the other, thanks to a consistent performance hole after hole. Shooting par on eight of the first nine holes, he also birdied No. 6 to shoot 1-under on the day and remain at even par overall at the turn.
Blomqvist, like Hendricks, started his day with a birdie on the opening hole and, just like his teammate, finished the opening nine at 1-over.
Blinderman's day started with seven straight pars; he eventually stepped onto the tee box at No. 10 at 2-over for the day.
Cal State East Bay began the day tied for fifth place in prime position to earn one of six highly-coveted automatic berths for the NCAA Men's Golf Championship, taking place later this month. And through nine holes, it remained above the projected cut line, three strokes away from third place as the remaining teams in contention wrapped up the first half of their respective rounds.
The Pioneers closed out the tournament in strong fashion, finishing third overall at even par (E) after posting a +1 team score in the final round. Western Washington claimed the regional title at 8-under, followed by West Texas A&M at 5-under.
With the result, Cal State East Bay secured one of the six qualifying spots and advanced to the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship.
