CHICO, Calif. — No. 12 Cal State East Bay split Saturday's doubleheader at Chico State, taking the opener 3-2 before falling 5-4 in game two at Wildcat Field.
The first game leaned on pitching after an early deficit.
Chico State struck for two runs in the opening inning, but East Bay answered in the second when Sarissa Block doubled in a run to cut the margin in half. The Pioneers evened the game in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Ava Benavides, then took the lead an inning later on an RBI single from Isabel Mercado.
That was enough for the pitching staff.
Jaidyn Gamble entered in relief and kept Chico State off the board over 5.2 innings, allowing just one hit while working around traffic. Marissa Quintero handled the final inning to secure the save as East Bay closed out the 3-2 win.
Game two unfolded with more back-and-forth action.
Chico State jumped out early with two runs in the first, but East Bay responded with a four-run third, highlighted by a three-run home run from Jennavee Campos to take the lead.
The Wildcats answered immediately.
Chico State scored once in the third and added two more in the fourth, capitalizing on defensive miscues to regain a 5-4 advantage.
East Bay continued to threaten, collecting nine hits, but could not find the tying run over the final three innings.
Rylee Gomez led the offense with three hits, while Campos drove in three runs with her home run. Jasmyn Morales added multiple hits as the Pioneers kept pressure on throughout.
No. 12 Cal State East Bay concludes the regular season with a 38-14 overall record.
