HAYWARD, Calif. — No. 10 Cal State East Bay split Saturday's doubleheader against San Francisco State, rolling to an 8-3 win in the opener before falling 3-1 in game two at Pioneer Field.
The first game flipped quickly.
After San Francisco State struck for three runs in the opening inning, East Bay answered immediately and never let up. The Pioneers matched it in the bottom half, then broke the game open with five runs in the second.
Mead drove in two runs in the first inning, and Carrillo added an RBI double in the second as part of a five-run frame highlighted by a two-run single from Hopkins.
From there, Quintero settled the game down.
Quintero went the distance, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out five. After the first inning, San Francisco State was held in check the rest of the way.
East Bay finished with 14 hits, with Cuellar and Carrillo each collecting three. Gomez and Hopkins added multiple hits as the offense stayed consistent throughout.
The second game followed a much tighter script.
San Francisco State broke through in the fourth and added runs in the fifth and sixth to build a 3-0 lead. East Bay had chances throughout, collecting seven hits, but couldn't string together enough offense.
The Pioneers finally broke through in the seventh when Gentry delivered an RBI single, but the late push came up short.
Benavides led the offense with three hits, while Mead added two.
With the win in game one, Cal State East Bay secured its spot in the CCAA Tournament.
The Pioneers will travel to Chico State next week to continue conference play.
