Late Surge Secures Sweep for No. 10 Pioneers Over San Francisco State

HAYWARD, Calif. — No. 10 Cal State East Bay swept Friday's doubleheader from San Francisco State, taking a 2-1 decision in the opener before completing the sweep with an 8-6 win in game two at Pioneer Field.

The opener leaned entirely on pitching.

San Francisco State broke through in the second, but East Bay answered late and found just enough offense to move in front. Gomez delivered the go-ahead run with an RBI double in the fifth.

From there, Quintero took over.

Quintero worked a complete game, allowing just two hits and one run while navigating four walks. San Francisco State put runners on throughout, but couldn't find the swing to break through.

Game two took a completely different shape.

San Francisco State struck early, using a four-run first inning and adding another in the second to build a 5-0 lead.

East Bay responded immediately.

The Pioneers scored twice in the second and added two more in the third, highlighted by a two-run double from Campos that evened the game at 5-5.

San Francisco State briefly moved back in front, but East Bay answered again in the sixth.

Morales tied the game with a solo home run, and Hopkins followed with a two-run shot to give the Pioneers an 8-6 lead.

San Francisco State threatened in the seventh, but East Bay closed it out to secure the sweep.

The Pioneers totaled 14 hits in game two, with Hopkins driving in three runs. Morales added two hits and an RBI, while Gomez and Cuellar each recorded multiple hits.

Cal State East Bay will wrap up the series Saturday with a doubleheader against San Francisco State at Pioneer Field.
