Cuellar Delivers Walk-Off as Pioneers Split with No. 1 Cougars

HAYWARD, Calif. — No. 8 Cal State East Bay split Friday's doubleheader against No. 1 Cal State San Marcos at Pioneer Field, falling 10-1 in the opener before rallying for a dramatic 4-3 walk-off win in game two.

In the first game, San Marcos used a pair of big innings to pull away.

The Cougars broke through with three runs in the fourth before adding three more in the sixth and four in the seventh to build separation. East Bay's lone run came in the third when Cynthia Carrillo delivered an RBI single to bring home Jeslyn Cuellar.

Cuellar and Rylee Gomez each recorded hits as the Pioneers finished with six. Marissa Quintero took the loss after allowing six runs over 5.2 innings.

The second game told a much different story, as the Pioneers delivered late when it mattered most.

San Marcos took an early lead with two runs in the third, but East Bay answered in the bottom half. Cuellar and Jasmyn Morales each drove in runs to even the score at 2-2.

After the Cougars regained the lead in the sixth on a solo home run, East Bay responded again. Reagan Hallett came through with an RBI single to tie the game at 3-3 and set the stage for a thrilling finish.

In the bottom of the seventh, with the game still deadlocked, Cuellar stepped to the plate and delivered an inside-the-park walk-off home run, sending the Pioneers off the field with a 4-3 victory.

Cuellar led the way with two hits, including the game-winning blast, while Morales added two hits and an RBI. East Bay finished with seven hits in the win.

In the circle, Jaidyn Gamble tossed a complete game, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out four.

Cal State East Bay returns to action next weekend with a CCAA series at Cal State San Bernardino.
