No. 9 Pioneers Take Opener, Fall Short in Game Two

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — No. 9 Cal State East Bay split Friday's doubleheader at Cal State San Bernardino, rolling to a 13-1 win in the opener before dropping a 4-2 decision in game two.

The first game was decided almost immediately.

East Bay took advantage of early miscues to push across two runs in the first, then broke the game open with a seven-run second inning. The rally featured contributions throughout the lineup, including RBI hits from Cynthia Carrillo, Macie Mead, and Jennavee Campos, as the Pioneers quickly built a commanding lead.

Additional runs in the fourth extended the margin to double digits, highlighted by a two-run double from Mariah Hopkins.

Despite finishing with just seven hits, East Bay capitalized on 11 walks and multiple errors to generate consistent offense.

Marissa Quintero set the tone in the circle, tossing three scoreless innings while allowing four hits. Ally Fuentes handled the final two innings as the Pioneers secured the 13-1 victory.

The second game unfolded much differently, with Cal State San Bernardino striking early and holding off a late push.

East Bay opened the scoring in the first when Cynthia Carrillo drove in a run, but the Coyotes answered with four runs in the bottom half, highlighted by a three-run double, to take control.

From there, pitching took over.

Quintero entered in relief and kept CSUSB off the board over the final 4.2 innings, allowing just one hit and giving East Bay a chance to climb back into the game.

The Pioneers cut into the deficit in the fourth on an RBI single from Reagan Hallett, but were unable to find the tying run despite putting runners on base late.

Jasmyn Morales led the offense with three hits, while Carrillo added two as East Bay finished with nine hits.

Cal State East Bay continues conference play next week.
