POMONA, Calif. - The top-seeded Cal State East Bay men's basketball continued its historic run Friday night, defeating Cal Poly Pomona 62–52, in the semifinal round of the CCAA Tournament. The Pioneers improved to 29-0 on the season and earned their first ever trip to the title game.
East Bay opened the contest with a 6-0 run behind baskets from
Jaayden Bush and
Tyree Campbell before the Broncos responded with a 12-2 run. The Pioneers quickly erased the early deficit and never looked back, scoring the next six points and never trailing again. CPP closed to within one point in the final minute of the half but Campbell converted the final basketball and sent the game to the second half leading 30-27.
After halftime East Bay quickly put the game away, ripping off a 11-0 run while holding the Broncos scoreless for over six minutes. The Pioneers led by as many as 16 in the game with a steady stream of baskets to keep Pomona at arms length.
Bush led all scorers with 15 points, converting 7-of-8 from the free throw line while adding three rebounds. Campbell finished with 14 points, five rebounds and four steals to help set the tone defensively.
Ramsey Huff added seven points and six rebounds, while Josh Ijeh anchored the interior with eight rebounds, four points and two assists.
East Bay also received key production from its bench as
Amare Campbell and
Terence Haywood each scored five points, and
Takai Emerson-Hardy added four.
Jordan Espinoza contributed two points and dished out a team-high four assists, helping the Pioneers maintain offensive flow during key stretches.
As a team, East Bay dominated the boards with a 45–35 rebounding advantage and held the Broncos to just 30.9 percent shooting from the field, including only one made three-pointer in the second half. The Pioneers also generated 14 fast-break points while forcing 14 turnovers to help secure the double-digit victory.
With the win, Cal State East Bay moves on to the CCAA Championship game for the first time in program history where they will take on Cal Poly Humboldt at 8:00 pm.
