Seven-Run Sixth Lifts Pioneers to Split Against Humboldt

HAYWARD, Calif. — No. 3 Cal State East Bay closed its CCAA series against Cal Poly Humboldt with a split Saturday at Pioneer Field, falling 8-2 in the opener before responding with an 11-5 win in game two.

In the first game, Humboldt built an early lead and maintained control throughout.

The Lumberjacks broke through in the second inning, capitalizing on a series of hits and defensive miscues to score four runs. They added two more in the third to extend the advantage to 6-0.

East Bay got on the board in the fifth when Jeslyn Cuellar tripled and later scored on a wild pitch. Jasmyn Morales added an RBI double in the seventh, but the Pioneers were unable to close the gap.

Cuellar and Rylee Gomez each recorded two hits as East Bay finished with seven hits in the contest.

Marissa Quintero took the loss after allowing six runs over 2.2 innings, while Ally Fuentes provided 4.1 innings of relief.

The second game unfolded much differently, as the Pioneers answered early pressure with a dominant offensive surge.

Humboldt jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning behind a two-run home run followed by a solo shot, and added two more runs in the second to move ahead 5-2.

East Bay chipped away in the second and fourth innings before breaking the game open in the sixth.

The Pioneers erupted for seven runs in the frame, highlighted by a three-run home run from Jenna Porto. Rylee Gomez added a two-run single, and Mariah Hopkins contributed an RBI sacrifice fly as East Bay turned a deficit into an 11-5 lead.

Porto finished with three RBIs, while Gomez drove in two and Morales collected three hits. East Bay totaled 15 hits in the victory.

Jaidyn Gamble earned the win with 6.2 innings of relief, allowing two runs, while Ally Fuentes made the start.

Cal State East Bay returns to action next week as conference play continues.
