No. 3 Pioneers Split Series-Opening Doubleheader with Humboldt

HAYWARD, Calif. — No. 3 Cal State East Bay opened its CCAA series against Cal Poly Humboldt with a split Friday at Pioneer Field, earning a 6-5 victory in the opener before dropping a 9-0 decision in game two.

In game one, the Pioneers responded early and held on late to secure the win.

Humboldt pushed across a run in the first inning, but East Bay answered with a five-run frame in the bottom half. Cynthia Carrillo and Jasmyn Morales each reached base before Marissa Farias delivered a two-run single. Jenna Porto followed with a sacrifice fly as the Pioneers built a 5-1 advantage.

The Lumberjacks cut into the lead with a run in the second and pulled even in the fourth with a three-run inning, tying the game at 5-5.

East Bay delivered the deciding run in the seventh. Morales singled to open the inning and Carrillo followed with a base hit. With two outs, Porto drove a single into the outfield to bring home the go-ahead run and lift the Pioneers to a 6-5 win.

Morales led the offense with three hits, while Carrillo added two. Farias recorded two RBIs as East Bay totaled nine hits.

Marissa Quintero earned the win in the circle, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits while striking out three.

The second game unfolded much differently.

Humboldt struck quickly, capitalizing on a seven-hit first inning to seize control. The Lumberjacks added two more runs in the fifth to extend the lead to 9-0.

East Bay was held to four hits in the game, with Jeslyn Cuellar, Marissa Farias, Macie Mead, and Mariah Hopkins each recording a hit.

Jaidyn Gamble took the loss after allowing seven runs in the opening inning, while Ally Fuentes provided 4.2 innings of relief.

Cal State East Bay continues the series Saturday with a doubleheader at Pioneer Field.
