KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Days after the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) awarded Tyree Campbell with district honors, the accolades have been upgraded to the national level. Campbell was named the Division II National Player of the Year.
Campbell's much-ballyhooed season continues after previously earning CCAA Player of the Year, D2CAA West Region Player of the Year, West Regional Most Outstanding Player, NABC All-District First Team and NABC All-America honors. It's been a meteoric rise for the three-year pioneer who went from CCAA Honorable Mention as a sophomore to CCAA Second Team as a junior to the nation's top player in his final season.Â
The 6'5 guard is an instant headache for opposing coaches, presenting serious matchup problems. The Rancho Cucamonga native averages 14.5 points per game to go along with 4.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.6 steals. Remarkably consistent, Campbell has scored in double digits in 28 of the 33 games to this point. Tremendously efficient, the senior shot 52% from the floor and a staggering 46% from deep. Of the 16 All-Americans this year, Campbell has averaged the least amount of minutes at 27.7 per game. On average, the All-Americans played 32.9 minutes per game, making Campbell's stats all the more impressive.
What the statistics belie are Campbell's leadership qualities; the team captain has not only led his team to an undefeated record but also authored numerous late comebacks.Â
Campbell's name is etched in the Pioneer record book. For his career, he ranks fourth in points, sixth in three-point field goals made and sixth in steals. He is the first Pioneer to win this award, which began in 1983.Â
Voted on by NABC-member coaches in each division, NABC Player of the Year awards are presented each season to outstanding student-athletes.Â
Campbell will continue his record-setting season today against Oklahoma Baptist at 11:30 a.m. PT.
