SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 4 Cal State East Bay picked up two wins Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex, holding off No. 20 Cal State Monterey Bay 5-4 in the opener before securing a 3-1 victory in game two.
In the first game, the Pioneers built an early advantage and held on late.
After Monterey Bay scored in the opening inning, East Bay responded in the second. Cynthia Carrillo reached base and Marissa Farias followed with a single to set the table. Jennavee Campos delivered a two-run double, and Sarissa Block added an RBI single to give the Pioneers a 3-1 lead.
East Bay added to the margin in the third. Carrillo doubled before a sacrifice fly from Jennavee Campos brought home a run. Mariah Hopkins then drove in two with a double to extend the lead to 5-1.
Monterey Bay answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to close within one, but East Bay's pitching settled in from there.
Jaidyn Gamble earned the win with five innings of work, and Marissa Quintero recorded the final two innings to secure the save and preserve the 5-4 victory.
Carrillo collected two hits, while Hopkins drove in two runs as the Pioneers totaled six hits in the opener.
The second game developed into a scoreless battle through six innings before East Bay broke through late.
Sarissa Block led off the seventh with a double, and Jeslyn Cuellar followed with a single to put runners in scoring position. Rylee Gomez brought home the first run on a groundout, and Jasmyn Morales added a run-scoring double. Reagan Hallett followed with a sacrifice fly to cap the three-run inning and give the Pioneers a 3-0 lead.
Monterey Bay pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh, but could not draw any closer.
Quintero went the distance in the circle, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out four.
Cuellar led the offense with four hits in the nightcap, while Gomez and Morales each recorded an RBI.
Cal State East Bay returns home next week as CCAA play continues.
