Pioneers Split Saturday's Games in NorCal Crossover Softball Tournament

TRACY, Calif. — On Saturday at the Tracy Sports Complex, No. 2 Cal State East Bay opened Day One of the NorCal Crossover Softball Tournament with a split, falling 11-0 in five innings to Western Washington before responding with a composed and convincing 7-1 victory over Saint Martin's. The day featured a difficult opener halted by a runaway second inning, followed by a resilient rebound keyed by early offense and another dominant showing in the circle from undefeated ace Marissa Quintero.

Western Washington 11, No. 2 Cal State East Bay 0 (5 innings)

In the first game, the Pioneers saw their 15-game winning streak come to an end despite a pair of base hits from Rylee Gomez, the lone East Bay player to reach safely more than once. Gomez opened the day with an infield single in the top of the first, but opportunities remained scarce. Her second hit came later in the game, yet the offense struggled to build any sustained pressure across the five-inning contest.

Western Washington seized control in the bottom of the second inning, crafting a nine-run surge that reshaped the game. A bases loaded hit-by-pitch plated the first run before two consecutive bases loaded walks extended the Vikings' lead. A sacrifice fly brought another run across, followed by a run-scoring single to deepen the deficit. The frame's biggest blows came on back-to-back doubles, each driving in two runs and widening the margin to an insurmountable level. The Vikings added two more runs in the fourth to secure an 11-0 run-rule result over the Pioneers (now 17-1), closing the contest with momentum firmly on their side.

No. 2 Cal State East Bay 7, Saint Martin's 1

The second game of the day took on a much different tone as Cal State East Bay regained its stride immediately in the bottom of the first. Leadoff hitter Jeslyn Cuellar delivered a jolt of energy by launching a solo home run to left, her second of the season and the 10th of her standout Pioneer career. Saint Martin's briefly drew level at 1-1 in the top of the third, but the Pioneers' response in the bottom half was swift and composed. With the bases loaded, Jasmyn Morales lifted a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Jennavee Campos to tag and score for a 2-1 advantage.

The Pioneers broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth with a four-run rally ignited by Isabel Mercado's pinch-hit RBI single. Moments later, Sarissa Block punched a single into the outfield to score Porto, and Cuellar added to her productive afternoon with a sacrifice fly. Gomez, continuing her superb day at the plate, drove in Block with a sharp RBI single to push the lead to 6-1.

East Bay added its final run in the sixth when Reagan Hallett produced an RBI single, extending the cushion to 7-1. That was more than enough for Quintero, who was once again in total command. The junior right-hander improved to 12-0 on the season after a complete-game performance, striking out eight while allowing just one run on three hits across seven innings. She retired the side in order in the seventh to seal the victory, reinforcing her status as one of the conference's most dominant pitchers with a 0.30 earned run average and a CCAA-leading 69 strikeouts. Gomez capped her standout day by going 4-for-5 across both games with an RBI.

Cal State East Bay returns to the Tracy Sports Complex on Sunday for the finl day of the NorCal Crossover, beginning with a matchup against Central Washington. The Pioneers defeated the Wildcats 6-5 in eight innings earlier this month and will look to build on Saturday's strong rebound. Sunday's game is the final tune-up for East Bay heading into CCAA play.
