HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay women's volleyball team completed a perfect weekend at home Saturday, sweeping Stanislaus State 3-0 at Pioneer Gymnasium. The Pioneers improved to 6-8 overall and 4-2 in CCAA play with their second victory in as many days.
East Bay was tested throughout each of the opening two sets. The Pioneers held off the Warriors 25-23 in the first before another tightly contested second set ended with the same 25-23 score, giving East Bay a 2-0 advantage in the match.
The Pioneers left little doubt in the third. East Bay produced its best offensive set of the afternoon, recording 18 kills with only four attack errors on 32 attempts for a .438 hitting percentage. The Pioneers took the final set 25-19 to complete the straight-set victory.
Isabelle Watson led the East Bay attack with a match-high 15 kills on 27 attempts. Gianna Navarro added 11 kills while hitting .350 and collecting six digs, while Barakat Adekola finished with 10 kills, 11 digs and two service aces for a double-double.
Pi'ilani Carvalho directed the Pioneer offense with 34 assists while adding four kills on seven attempts for a .571 hitting percentage. Carvalho also contributed two block assists.
Natali Herrera was efficient in the attack, recording four kills without an error on six attempts for a .667 hitting percentage. Kale'a Kuamo'o led the Pioneers defensively with a match-high 13 digs, while Lauren Au added three digs and two service aces.
East Bay finished the match with 45 kills and a .286 hitting percentage, compared with 38 kills and a .220 percentage for Stanislaus State. The Pioneers also recorded 41 digs and four service aces.
After hitting .294 in the opening set and battling through a tightly contested second, East Bay saved its best offensive performance for the third, hitting .438 to close out the sweep.
The victory capped a 2-0 weekend at Pioneer Gymnasium after East Bay defeated Chico State in four sets Friday and followed with Saturday's sweep of Stanislaus State.
