HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State East Bay Athletics has named Claire Beaty head coach of its women's swimming program. A former Pioneer All-American and assistant coach, Beaty returns to lead the program following Shane Pelton's departure for the director of swimming and diving position at CSU Bakersfield.
"Claire knows what it means to be a Pioneer, and she understands the standard we want to set for this program," said Allison Kern, associate vice president and director of athletics. "She brings a deep commitment to developing student-athletes in the pool, in the classroom and beyond. We're excited to welcome her back to lead East Bay swimming."
Beaty graduated from Cal State East Bay in 2018 after four years on the swimming team. A five-time All-American, she was the NCAA Division II runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke and earned the university's Female Athlete of the Year honor in 2017–18. She also served as president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was named an Academic All-American. Beaty holds Pioneer program records in both breaststroke events and later competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
"Cal State East Bay has played such an important role in my life, and I'm honored to return as head coach," Beaty said. "I know how much this program and its people mean to our student-athletes. I'm excited to build a team culture rooted in hard work, connection and pride in being a Pioneer."
Beaty previously served as an assistant coach at East Bay, helping the Pioneers win a Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference championship in her first season on staff. She also worked in East Bay athletic operations and communications before joining San José State Athletics as an athletics business coordinator in 2023.
