LIVERMORE, Calif. — On a warm Friday afternoon at Las Positas College Soccer Field, Cal State East Bay men's soccer hosted Vanguard University in a non-conference clash that doubled as Senior Day for the Pioneers. Despite a spirited performance and several near chances, East Bay fell 1-0 to the Lions, who scored early and held on for the win.
Prior to kickoff, the Pioneers honored eight seniors for their contributions to the program: Matthew Miller, Eugenio Perez-Vera Merino, Pablo Almontes, Bennett Richards, Yuto Hatayama, Alan Gutierrez, Brian Mariano and James Garlick.
VU 1, EB 0 –Vanguard struck early in the first half, capitalizing on a quick buildup in the 6th minute. Kevin Abarca netted his first goal of the season with a low shot to the left side of the frame, assisted by Adan Alvarado. The goal proved to be the difference in a match that saw both teams battle for control throughout.
Cal State East Bay nearly responded just 20 seconds into the second half, when a promising attack resulted in a goal that was ultimately nullified by an offsides call. The Pioneers continued to press for an equalizer, generating multiple chances but were unable to convert.
