Second Half Surge by Pioneers Keeps Them Unbeaten on Sunday

LOS ANGELES — Cal State East Bay closed out the 2025 calendar year in dramatic fashion, storming back from a 14-point halftime deficit to defeat Cal State LA 77-69 on Sunday afternoon at Cal State LA University Gym. In a game defined by momentum swings, the Pioneers delivered a relentless second-half surge to stay perfect at 10-0 overall and 4-0 in CCAA play.

The Golden Eagles controlled the first half, erasing an early East Bay lead with a 22-4 run to end the period. After Ramsey Huff's second-chance jumper put the Pioneers ahead 19-15 at the 6:05 mark, Cal State LA rattled off 12 straight points as part of the 22-4 run and carried a 37-23 advantage into the break.

East Bay wasted no time flipping the script. Just 17 seconds into the second half, Tyree Campbell buried a 3-pointer to ignite a 10-0 run that cut the deficit to four. Cal State LA briefly rebuilt its lead to double digits, but the Pioneers chipped away. At the 9:00 mark, Jaayden Bush drilled a 3-pointer to pull East Bay within two at 55-53.

The game's turning point came with under seven minutes to play. After a Tyree Campbell 3-pointer and an LA layup, Amare Campbell answered with a deep shot to make it 61-59. Moments later, a Golden Eagles turnover set up Amare Campbell for a game-tying layup and a foul. His free throw gave East Bay its first lead of the second half, 62-61. Huff followed with a steal and fast-break finish for a three-point cushion.

Cal State LA stayed close behind a Donovan Vickers 3-pointer, but East Bay delivered the knockout in the final minutes. Jalen Foy connected from beyond the arc at 2:31, and Terence Haywood turned a steal into a dunk for a six-point lead. Free throws down the stretch sealed the comeback and the 77-69 victory.

Bush led the Pioneers (10-0) with 20 points, shooting 5-for-8 from the field and 9-for-10 at the line, while adding two blocks and a steal. Tyree Campbell posted his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds — his last double-double came on the same court in January 2025. Amare Campbell added 14 points, and Haywood chipped in 12. Ten of the 11 Pioneers who saw action grabbed at least one rebound as East Bay dominated the glass with 43 boards.

Cal State East Bay head coach Bryan Rooney praised his team's resilience: "The second half response from our group was the definition of a player led team. Our energy and activity in the first two minutes after halftime set the tone and I am extremely proud with how we finished."

Next up, the Pioneers return home to face Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, Jan. 2, 2026 at Pioneer Gymnasium in Hayward. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
