HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State East Bay closed out its regular season in winning fashion Thursday afternoon, as senior midfielder
Mika Sayfurahman scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills. The win improved the Pioneers to 5-4-2 in CCAA play and secured the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament.
Sayfurahman continued her outstanding form by netting the match-winner in the 54th minute, finishing a setup from
Abigail Kern to put the Pioneers ahead early in the second half. The goal marked Sayfurahman's seventh of the season and her fifth in the last three matches.
East Bay's defensive unit was rock-solid throughout, holding the Toros to just five shots on goal. Goalkeepers
Natalie Hassmann and
Ashley Levi combined for the shutout, with Hassmann making one save in the first half and Levi stopping four shots over the final 45 minutes to secure the clean sheet.
Kern added two shots of her own, including the assist on Sayfurahman's strike, while
Morgan Pearson and Sayfurahman each put a shot on goal. The Pioneers finished with six total shots and capitalized on their best opportunity of the afternoon.
With the victory, East Bay improved to 7-8-3 overall. The Pioneers will now travel to Turlock to take on Stanislaus State in the first round of the CCAA Tournament on Sunday. The winner will then advance to the semifinals on the campus of Cal State Monterey next week.
