Pioneers Season Comes to End in First Round of CCAA Tournament

Turlock, Calif. — Cal State East Bay women's soccer saw its postseason run come to an end Sunday afternoon, as the Pioneers fell 3–2 to Stanislaus State in the first round of the CCAA Tournament at Warrior Stadium.  The sixth-seeded Pioneers (7–9–3, 5–4–2 CCAA) fought back from a two-goal deficit to make it a one-score match late, but the third-seeded Warriors (11–4–4, 6–3–2 CCAA) held on to advance to the semifinals.

Stanislaus State opened the scoring early when Shauna Johnston connected in the sixth minute off an assist from Haylee Sousa. The Warriors doubled their lead in the 31st minute after Jocelin Roa converted a penalty kick, sending Stanislaus into halftime up 2–0.

Cal State East Bay came out pressing in the second half and nearly cut the lead in half in the 62nd minute when the Pioneers earned a penalty kick. Morgan Pearson's attempt was saved, but Kella Folkerts reacted first to the rebound, finishing from close range to make it 2–1.

The Warriors extended their advantage to 3–1 in the 75th minute as Kellyann Rodriguez scored to add an important insurance goal. Refusing to go quietly, East Bay answered again in the 83rd minute when Rachel Mull buried a pass from Mika Sayfurahman to pull the Pioneers within 3–2.

Despite several late pushes, including a dangerous corner in the final minutes, the Pioneers couldn't find the equalizer. Dong finished with four saves in 77 minutes of action, while Ashley Levi recorded one stop in the opening 13 minutes.

Abigail Kern led East Bay with four shots, including one on goal, while Mull and Folkerts each tallied a goal. Sayfurahman's assist marked her 18th point of the season to lead the team.

The loss concludes a strong season for Cal State East Bay, which returned to the CCAA postseason for the second year in a row.
