HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State East Bay stayed unbeaten Tuesday with a 73-58 win over Saint Martin's at Pioneer Gymnasium, pulling away late after a competitive first half. The Pioneers (4-0) used balanced scoring and a decisive rebounding edge to secure their fourth straight victory to open the season.
East Bay jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first five minutes, sparked by a pair of early 3-pointers from Jalen Foy and a triple from Ramsey Huff. The Saints answered with a 6-0 run and briefly took a 16-15 lead at the 11:32 mark on an Anthony Simo layup. That was short-lived, as the Pioneers regained control behind strong inside play from Takai Emerson-Hardy and Terence Haywood. Haywood's pull-up jumper at 5:49 pushed the margin to nine, and East Bay carried a 35-28 lead into halftime. Foy led all scorers at the break with 14 points, including two 3-pointers and a perfect 4-for-5 from the line.
The second half saw East Bay maintain its advantage before breaking the game open. A Haywood tip-in at 14:31 gave the Pioneers their first double-digit lead at 44-34, and Huff followed with a 3-pointer to make it 47-34. Saint Martin's trimmed the deficit to four with nine minutes remaining after a Kaden Hansen 3-pointer, but East Bay responded with an 8-0 surge capped by Emerson-Hardy's layup at 2:20 for a 67-54 cushion. Tyree Campbell added a late basket and free throws to seal the win.
- Foy paced East Bay with 17 points on 5-for-10 shooting, hitting three 3-pointers and going 4-for-5 at the stripe. He also grabbed six rebounds.
- Campbell scored 14 points and added three assists, while Huff and Emerson-Hardy chipped in 11 points apiece. Huff hit three shots from beyond the arc and matched Foy with six boards.
- Jaayden Bush and Amare Campbell combined for six steals, helping East Bay convert 19 Saint Martin's turnovers into 19 points.
- The Pioneers shot 41.3 percent from the field and dominated the glass 43-34, including 21 second-chance points. Saint Martin's finished at 38.8 percent shooting and was led by Hansen's 21 points.
Cal State East Bay head coach Bryan Rooney praised his team's effort: "Tremendous effort by our guys tonight. I loved our connectivity on both ends against an excellent well-coached team in St. Martin's. We have another big game on Saturday and look forward to improving."
The Pioneers hit the road for the first time this season, visiting Concordia University Irvine on Saturday for a 3 p.m. non-conference matchup at CU Arena. East Bay will look to avenge a 74-55 loss to the Eagles last season.
