HAYWARD, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team notched its second consecutive win on Saturday evening, defeating Sonoma State 71-64 in a CCAA matchup at Pioneer Gymnasium.
The Pioneers and Seawolves battled closely throughout the first half. East Bay managed to gain a slight edge, taking a 19-17 lead on a layup by Sierra Morris late the first quarter. East bay extended its lead to 42-37 by halftime when Ariyah Smith made a basket at the end of the second quarter.
The home team maintained control in the second half, outscoring Sonoma State in both the third (11-10) and fourth (18-17) quarters to secure the victory. A key moment for the Pioneers was a 10-2 run in the fourth quarter after the Seawolves climbed back in the game, as East Bay stretched its lead from 55-53 to 65-55, proved crucial in sealing the win.
- Taylor Eldredge led the Pioneers with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting and 2-of-4 from the free-throw line as she is averaging a team-high 12.6 points-per-game. She also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
- Smith contributed 12 points and dished out a game-high seven assists while adding a pair of steals.
- Lailah Carey and Gwendilyn Aasland each scored 10 points, with Aasland also recording two blocks.
- Cal State East Bay shot an impressive 53.1 percent compared to Sonoma State's 38.7 percent.
- The Pioneers outrebounded the Seawolves 33-29.
- East Bay recorded 24 assists on 26 made field goals, showcasing excellent ball movement.
