LA MIRADA, Calif. – On Friday, Cal State East Bay women's water polo took on Biola in a WWPA showdown at Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatic Center. The Pioneers came up short, falling 11-8 to the Eagles as a seven-match win streak ended for CSUEB.
The Pioneers were held scoreless in the first quarter and surrendered the first goal of the second quarter to fall behind 3-0. At the 6:08 mark of the second quarter,
Rachel Heredia got the Pioneers on the scoreboard with a power play goal.
Luna Sarmiento added a pair of goals to the Pioneers' total in the second quarter, but a pair of Eagles' goals maintained the lead into halftime, where Biola led 5-3.
Although
Alex Andrist brought the Pioneers within a goal at the 4:58 mark of the third quarter, the Eagles scored the next three goals. With 12 seconds left in the quarter,
Hope Grantham scored a power play goal. Biole led 8-5 going into the final quarter.
Both teams traded two goals each to start the fourth quarter, then
Jordan Jarandson converted a penalty shot with 1:59 left as the Pioneers trailed 10-8. However, the Eagles scored a goal with 12 seconds left for an 11-8 win.
- Sarmiento had three goals on Friday with one assist. She also drew three exclusions.
- Jarandson scored a goal on a penalty shot, and also had two assists.

Only two regular season matches remain for the Pioneers in 2024, both of which are next week. The first of the two takes place on Friday, April 12 at UC Merced with an opening sprint set for 2 p.m. Twice this season, the Pioneers dominated the Bobcats with a 17-5 win on February 10 and a 23-2 win on March 8.
