LA MIRADA, Calif. – The quarterfinals of the 2024 WWPA Women's Water Polo Championships took place Friday from Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatic Center. Cal State East Bay women's water polo dominated the action with a 14-5 victory over Salem and advanced to Saturday's semifinals.
The Pioneers scored the first seven goals of the match with the first two from
Luna Sarmiento. During the stretch,
Bailey Barlow scored two goals as well with one goal each scored by
Rachel Heredia,
Hope Grantham and
Lola Gill.
Salem's only goal of the first half was at the 3:25 mark on a successful penalty shot by Taeghen Hack.
After the penalty goal for the Tigers, Sarmiento and Barlow added another goal each as the Pioneers led 9-1 at halftime.
Although the rate of scoring for the Pioneers was lower in the second half, Cal State East Bay went on to a 14-5 win to advance to the semifinals.
- Sarmiento finished with three goals and two assists. Defensively, she had two steals and one field block.
- Barlow had three goals as well.
- With two goals each for the Pioneers were Grantham, Gill and Clare Baty.
- Elise Whitworth and Kohia Rego drew three exclusions each.
- In net for 26:14 in total, Daniela Passoni made 11 saves while only giving up two goals.

On Saturday, the Pioneers take on McKendree in the semifinals of the 2024 WWPA Championships. Opening sprint from Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatic Center is scheduled for 2:45 p.m. On March 2, the Pioneers defeated the Bearcats, 8-5 during the Convergence Tournament in a non-conference match.
