LA MIRADA, Calif. – The semifinals of the 2024 WWPA Women's Water Polo Championships took place Saturday from Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatic Center. Cal State East Bay women's water polo advanced into Sunday's championship match with a 10-4 victory over McKendree.
The first three goals of the match were scored by
Alex Andrist, as the Pioneers had a 4-1 advantage following the first quarter of action. In the second quarter, the Pioneers kept the Bearcats out of the net with a 3-0 advantage taking a 7-1 lead into halftime. In addition to Andrist's three goals,
Audrey Dexter,
Luna Sarmiento,
Elise Whitworth and
Bailey Barlow each netted one goal in the first half.
Although the score in the second half was an even 3-3, with two of CSUEB's goals from Sarmiento, McKendree was unable to climb back in the match as the Pioneers cruised into the championship showdown with a 10-4 win.
- Sarmiento and Andrist each finished with three goals and two assists on Saturday.
- Barlow had one goal and two assists.
- Drawing three exclusions was Hope Grantham.
- Defensively, Sarmiento had three steals.
- In net, Daniela Passoni made six saves.

For the second time in three years, the Pioneers will play for the WWPA Women's Water Polo Championship. Cal State East Bay will take on Biola for the title. Opening sprint from Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatic Center is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. on Sunday. The Pioneers and Eagles split their series in the regular season, as CSUEB won 14-13 on March 22 and Biola won 11-8 on April 5.
