HAYWARD, Calif. – After five tournaments to start the 2024 season for Cal State East Bay women's water polo, the Pioneers finally played their first home match of the season on Friday. And in the home opener, the Pioneers controlled from start to finish, cruising to a 23-2 win at Pioneer Pool over UC Merced.
The Pioneers scored seven unanswered goals in the first quarter, including two each from
Lola Gill and
Alex Andrist. The goals piled up for CSUEB in the second quarter, as four straight goals added up to an 11-0 lead.
Although the Bobcats finally found the net late in the second quarter,
Bailey Barlow scored her first goal of the day at the 1:29 mark, leading to a 12-1 lead at halftime.
Both teams split the first two goals of the third quarter, but with 5:27 left in the quarter,
Clare Baty found the net, which was the first of 10 straight goals for the Pioneers to finish with a 23-2 home-opening victory on Friday.
- There were 13 total goal scorers for the Pioneers on Friday accounting for their 23 goals.
- Andrist led the scoring with four goals and two assists.
- Also reaching a hat trick with three goals was Dexter.
- Ingrid Rubio Miro, Rachel Heredia, Emily Clapham, Barlow and Gill each scored two goals on Friday.
- Daniela Passoni and Marilyn Rodriguez-Garcia de Leon split time in net with 16 minutes each allowing one goal each, combining for 10 saves. Rodriguez-Garcia de Leon had a pair of steals.
