HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay women's water polo hosted No. 21 Pacific at Pioneer Pool on Thursday afternoon. After a close first half, the Tigers took full control in the second half to defeat the Pioneers, 18-9.
Both teams traded goals in the earlier portion of the first quarter, then
Alex Andrist found the net at the 2:38 mark for a 3-2 lead then less than a minute later,
Elise Whitworth added another goal to the Pioneer tally as the Pioneers led 4-2 after one quarter.
Hope Grantham and
Luna Sarmiento scored the other two goals for CSUEB in the opening quarter.
The Tigers would tie the game with two goals within the first two minutes of the second quarter. The Pioneers regained the lead, 5-4, with 5:44 left in the half on a Sarmiento strike. The Pioneers got tallies from
Bailey Barlow, Sarmiento, and Whitworth in the rest of the quarter, but Pacific kept pace during the stretch, and took a 9-8 lead with seven seconds left in the half on a goal from Hila Futorian.
In the second half, Pacific dominated, as the lone goal of the second half for CSUEB was from Sarmiento at the 1:51 mark of the third quarter. The Pioneers were held scoreless in the fourth quarter, as Pacific pulled away for an 18-9 win, taking all three matchups in the series this season.
- Sarmiento finished with four goals on Thursday.
- Whitworth had two goals and one assist.
- Grantham, Sarmiento and Whitworth each drew two exclusions apiece.
- For Pacific, Dora Alaksza scored seven goals and had three assists.
- Pacific outshot Cal State East Bay, 38-28.
- The Pioneers won three of the four opening sprints.
