Pioneer Softball Splits CCAA Doubleheader at CSUMB Friday

SEASIDE, Calif. – Cal State East Bay softball traveled to Seaside to start a four-game CCAA series with Cal State Monterey Bay. The Otters won game one 3-1 and the Pioneers won by run rule, 10-1, in six innings, in game two.

GAME SUMMARIES

Game One – Cal State Monterey Bay 3, Cal State East Bay 1
The Otters took a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Pioneers trimmed the Otters' lead to 3-1 in the top of the third inning on an Annelise Garcia RBI single to left center that drove in  Jeslyn Cuellar. The Pioneers did not have a base runner for the remainder of the game as the Otters won 3-1.
  • Garcia had the lone hit and RBI of the game for the Pioneers.
Game #2 – Cal State East Bay 10, Cal State Monterey Bay 1 (6 innings)
The Pioneers scored three runs in the top of the first. Adriana Martinez hit an RBI single to drive in Cynthia Carrillo, Mariah Ayala drew a bases loaded walk and Martinez scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead.
 
In the top of the fifth, Garcia launched her third home run of the season, Ayala drew another bases loaded walk and Ysabella Cortez hit a single to drive in a pair of runs for a 7-0 lead.
 
Garcia hit her second home run of the game in the sixth inning and later in the inning, Martinez hit a two-run homr run for a 10-0 lead.
 
Although the Otters scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, the Pioneers closed out the game one out later for a 10-1 run-rule victory to split the doubleheader.
  • Marissa Quintero improves to 4-3 on the season with 5.0 innings in the circle, striking out three and allowing no runs.
  • Martinez led the Pioneers' offense going 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
  • Friday's second game was the first in Garcia's career in which she hit two home runs.

The Pioneers will return to Otter Sports Complex on Saturday to finish their series with Cal State Monterey Bay. First pitch of game one is set for noon followed by the series finale to follow.
