HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay women's water polo defeated Fresno Pacific, 18-12 in a WWPA match on Friday afternoon at Pioneer Pool following an emotional honoring of Dr. Cal Caplan in the We Play for Cappy Game.
It took only 20 seconds for the Pioneers to get on the scoreboard first with a goal from
Alex Andrist. In the first quarter, the Pioneers outscored FPU, 4-3 with three of CSUEB's goals from Andrist.
The Pioneers scored the first four goals of the second quarter, three of which were from
Luna Sarmiento. A 6-2 quarter for the Pioneers was capped off by a goal at the buzzer from
Hope Grantham to give CSUEB a 10-5 lead heading into the break.
In the third quarter, the Pioneers and Sunbirds played evenly at 3-3 as Cal State East Bay took a 13-8 advantage into the final quarter.
FPU was able to close the deficit to three goals with 3:05 left, but the final three goals of the match went to the Pioneers with two from Ingrid Rubio Miro and one from Grantham as Cal State East Bay won 18-12 in the We Play for Cappy Game.
- Andrist scored a season-high six goals and had one assist. She won all four sprints in the match.
- Sarmiento had three goals and three assists. Defenslively, Sarmiento had three steals.
- In net, Daniela Passoni made 11 saves playing all 32 minutes.
