WHITTIER, Calif. – The final non-conference tournament for Cal State East Bay women's water polo wrapped up Saturday as the Pioneers went 1-1 on the day at Slade Aquatics Center in the 2024 Convergence Tournament. CSUEB won the morning match, a 8-5 non-conference win against McKendree and in the afternoon, and a 17-4 loss to Azusa Pacific. After five non-conference tournaments to start the season, Cal State East Bay is 7-9.
Cal State East Bay 8, McKendree 5
The Pioneers outscored the Bearcats 3-1 in the opening quarter with two of the three goals from
Elise Whitworth. An even 1-1 second quarter put the Pioneers ahead 3-2 at halftime.
Whitworth added two more goals in the third quarter, and shut out McKendree for a 5-2 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Bearcats scored three goals in the fourth quarter, but a pair of goals from
Luna Sarmiento maintained the Pioneer lead, as Cal State East Bay finished with an 8-5 win.
- Whitworth scored four goals in total and had one assist.
- Sarmiento had a pair of goals and one assist.
- Passoni had the win in net with four saves.
Azusa Pacific 17, Cal State East Bay 4
The Cougars jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in less than three minutes from the opening sprint. Two more goals were added to APU's first quarter tally for a 6-0 lead.
Despite an even 3-3 second quarter and an even 1-1 third quarter, APU bookended shutout quarters holding the Pioneers scoreless in the fourth, cruising to a 17-4 win.

The 2024 home opener at Pioneer Pool takes place for Cal State East Bay on Friday, March 8 when the Pioneers host UC Merced. Opening serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. In the Aggie Invite on February 10, the Pioneers won 17-5 over the Bobcats.
