HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay softball opened up a CCAA series at Pioneer Softball Field on Friday afternoon against Cal State Dominguez Hills. In the series opener,
Marissa Quintero pitched a no-hitter, as Cal State East Bay won 8-0 in five innings by run rule. The Pioneers followed up with a 7-0 win in the second game on Friday.
Game One - Cal State East Bay 8, Cal State Dominguez Hills 0 (5 innings)
After two scoreless innings, the Pioneers' offense would explode for five runs.
Gabriela Rivera hit an RBI single, and
Adriana Martinez and
Alexa Zumstein each hit a two-run double, adding up to a 5-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Pioneers would score two runs – one on an RBI groundout to second base by Rivera and one on a
Cynthia Carrillo RBI single through the left side that drove in
Annelise Garcia for a 7-0 lead.
Through five innings in the circle, Quintero did not allow a hit.
In the bottom of the fifth, with the bases loaded,
Mariah Ayala was on third base as a pinch runner. An infield RBI single by
Sarissa Block drove in Ayala for CSUEB's eighth run, securing the run-rule victory, and a no-hitter for Quintero.
- Quintero pitched a no-hitter in only her ninth appearance in the circle for the Pioneers, with five innings pitched, striking out two.
- Martinez, Carrillo and Block had two hits each in game one. Both of Martinez's hits were doubles.
Game Two – Cal State East Bay 7, Cal State Dominguez Hills 0
The Pioneers scored all seven of their runs in the bottom of the first inning. RBI hits from Rivera, Martinez, Block, Ayala and Garcia totaled seven runs in the inning. Garcia batted twice in the inning, and hit a triple and a double.
In the circle,
Ashlee Toy would not give up a hit until the fifth inning as she pitched her second complete game shutout of the season.
- Toy's shutout included a strikeout and only four hits allowed.
- Garcia had two hits for the Pioneers with two RBIs.
- The Pioneers swept a doubleheader with two shutouts for the first time since March 19, 2016.
Cal State East Bay: 12-6, 8-4 CCAA
Cal State Dominguez Hills: 13-9, 10-6 CCAA
