WHITTIER, Calif. – On Friday, Cal State East Bay women's water polo went 1-1 in the first day of the 2024 Convergence Tournament. The Pioneers took their first match of the day to a 19-13 win over Virginia Military Institute, but dropped Friday's second match, 10-9 to California Baptist. After Friday's action, the Pioneers are 6-8 overall.
Cal State East Bay 19, VMI 13
Although the Keydets jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead, the Pioneers finished the first quarter on a 4-1 run. Five Pioneers found the net in the first quarter including
Lola Gill,
Bailey Barlow,
Jordan Jarandson,
Audrey Dexter and
Elise Whitworth. The next five goals went to the Pioneers to start the second quarter. CSUEB led 10-5 at halftime.
VMI outscored the Pioneers 4-3 in the third quarter to make up some ground, but the Pioneers scored six goals in the fourth quarter, and finished with a 19-13 win.
California Baptist 10, Cal State East Bay 9
The Pioneers kept pace with CBU in the first half, but were trailing 5-3 at halftime as the Lancers broke a 3-3 tie late in the second quarter with a pair of goals.
Kohia Rego, Jarandson and
Hope Grantham each scored a goal for CSUEB in the first half.
An even third quarter and an early goal from CBU had the Pioneers trailing 9-6 late in the match. The Pioneers scored three unanswered goals with one each from Barlow, Jarandson and Grantham to tie the match at 9-9 with 2:17 remaining in regulation.
However, with 52 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Kyra Kahahawai found the net for CBU to go ahead 10-9. The Lancers held on to win 10-9 as CSUEB split Friday's action in the Convergence Tournament.

- Whitworth had a pair of goals and a pair of assists.

On Saturday, CSUEB plays two more matches in the 2024 Convergence Tournament, including a 9:30 a.m. opening sprint against McKendree and a matchup at 1:15 p.m. against Azusa Pacific. Both mathes will be played at Slade Aquatics Center on the campus of Whittier College.
