SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Cal State East Bay softball swept a CCAA road doubleheader on Friday against Cal State San Bernardino. The Pioneers won game one, 7-3, and completed the sweep with a 14-3 run-rule win in game two.
Game One – Cal State East Bay 7, Cal State San Bernardino 3
Annelise Garcia launched a solo home run and
Cynthia Carrillo hit two-run home run in the top of the first inning to give the Pioneers a 3-0 lead.
The Coyotes answered with one run in the bottom of the first inning on a bases loaded walk drawn by Bri Goris.
Four more runs were added to the Pioneer total in the top of the fifth inning. RBI hits from
Alexa Zumstein and Garia, in addition to a sacrifice bunt RBI from
Ysabella Cortez, and an error that allowed
Kylie Coelho to score a run accumulated to a 7-1 lead in the top of the fifth.
CSUSB got a pair of runs on a two-run home run by Brooke Brazill, but the Pioneers held the Coyotes scoreless in the final two innings as CSUEB won game one, 7-3.
- In the circle, Ashlee Toy earned the win with 6.0 innings pitched allowing three runs.
- Five Pioneers had two hits each in game one, including Garcia, Carrillo, Zumstein, Rivera and Jeslyn Cuellar.
Game Two – Cal State East Bay 14, Cal State San Bernardino 3 (5 innings)
The offense for Cal State East Bay wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. With Garcia and
Kyana Elder on base to start the game, Carrillo launched her second home run of the day for a 3-0 lead. After the home run,
Adriana Martinez, Rivera and
Sarissa Block reached base to load the bases. Then, Cuellar hit a single to drive in two runs, and another run was driven in on a double by Cortez. After Cortez reached third base on a passed ball, Toy hit an RBI single to give the Pioneers a 7-0 lead with all nine batters safely reaching base on their first plate appearances in the game.
CSUSB got two runs back in the bottom of the first inning and a third in the bottom of the second.
Garcia led off the top of the fourth with a double, and Elder singled to follow. A wild pitch allowed Garcia to score the eighth run for the Pioneers. Later in the inning, Elder scored on an error, Martinez scored on a wild pitch, Rivera scored on a bases loaded walk drawn by
Harley Acosta, and two more runs scored on a single from Toy to drive in Block and Cuellar as CSUEB led 13-3.
Mariah Ayala hit an RBI double in the top of the fifth for a 14-3 lead.
By run-rule, after the Pioneers held the Coyotes scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, CSUEB won 14-3 in five innings to complete Friday's doubleheader sweep.
- Marissa Quintero pitched all five defensive innings for the Pioneers with three strikeouts and three runs allowed.
- Rivera went 3-for-3 in the game.
- Toy and Carrillo had three RBIs each.
- The win was the first by run-rule by the Pioneers in CCAA action since February 26, 2022 (8-0 in five innings vs. Cal Poly Humboldt).
