Pioneer Softball Splits Second Day of Concordia Kickoff Classic

AZUSA, Calif. – Cal State East Bay softball played the second day of the Concordia Kickoff Classic as they took on Azusa Pacific and Colorado Christian on the APU campus. The Pioneers shut out Azusa Pacific 6-0 and lost 3-0, in eight innings, to Colorado Christian. Through three games, the Pioneers are 2-1.

The Pioneers got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning with a pair runs on an Adriana Martinez two run home run to left center that drove in Annelise Garcia. In the top of the second inning, the Pioneers added three runs – one on an RBI single from Garcia another on a bases loaded walk to Martinez and the fifth run for CSUEB was one on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch taken by Kyana Elder for an RBI. Elder hit an RBI double to right center that drove in Garcia in the top of the sixth inning for a 6-0 lead, as that would become the final score.
  • Toy earned the shutout win for the Pioneers in her first Cal State East Bay appearance in the circle with 7.0 scoreless innings and three strikeouts.
  • Elder, Toy, Garcia and Cynthia Carrillo each had two hits in the game.
  • Martinez had three total RBIs. 
Colorado Christian 3, Cal State East Bay 0 (8 innings)
The instant classic did not have a run scored until the top of the eighth inning when the Cougars scored three runs including an RBI double from Logan Menzies, Menzies scoring as a result of an error and a sacrifice fly by Kayla Middleton.
  • Both Carrillo and Jeslyn Cuellar went 1-for-3 to lead the Pioneers' offense.

With rain in the forecast, the final scheduled game for Cal State East Bay in the 2024 Concordia Kickoff Classic has been cancelled.
 
The next scheduled game for the Pioneers takes place on Wednesday, February 14 for the 2024 home opener. Game one of a non-conference doubleheader against Academy of Art is scheduled for noon from Pioneer Softball Field.
