Pioneers Split First Day of Tina Finali Tournament

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.  Cal State East Bay traveled to Southern California to take part in the Tina Finali Tournament hosted by California Lutheran University. The Pioneers lost 14-12 to No. 25 CSUN and won 17-7 over Whittier College in the evening. Through Friday, the Pioneers are 4-6 overall.

MATCH SUMMARIES

No. 25 CSUN 14, Cal State East Bay 12
In the first quarter, the Matadors would score their first two goals of the game within the first 49 seconds. Luna Sarmiento would score the lone Pioneers' tally of the quarter with 7:01 left. The Matadors added three goals in the opening quarter and in the first frame, led 5-1.
 
Bailey Barlow, Rachel Heredia and Sarmiento scored consecutively to open the second quarter for the Pioneers, as they trailed 5-4. The Matadors would score a goal to extend their lead to 6-4 with 4:54 left in the half. Barlow and Heredia would score to tie the game at 6-6 with 1:36 left in the half. The Matadors would score with 26 seconds left to take a 7-6 lead into halftime.
 
The Matadors added to their lead with a pair of goals to start the second half, ahead 9-6. Jordan Jarandson scored with 6:20 left in the quarter to trim the Matadors' lead to 9-7 with 6:20 left in the quarter. The Matadors would score a goal with 5:45 left in the quarter for a 10-7 lead. Hope Grantham, Heredia and Elise Whitworth scored goals over the next 4:50 of clock time to tie the game at 10-10. The Matadors took an 11-10 lead late in the third.
 
CSUN scored the first goal of the fourth quarter to extend its lead to 12-10 with five minutes remaining. Sarmiento and Whitworth would tie the game with back-to-back goals, 12 seconds apart as the score was even at 12-12 with 4:45 left. The Matadors broke the tie at the 3:21 mark of the quarter and added one more in the final minute for a 14-12 win over CSUEB.
  • CSUN outshot Cal State East Bay 31-28 and the Matadors would win all four opening sprints. 
  • Heredia and Sarmiento had a hat trick each.
Cal State East Bay 17, Whittier 7
In the first quarter, the Pioneers' offense exploded for six goals. Alex Andrist, Barlow, Jarandson, Grantham, Kohia Rego and Sarmiento each netted a goal as the Pioneers led 6-0 after the first quarter.
 
In the second quarter, the Pioneers expanded their lead to 8-0, after goals from Raisa Guisado and Sarmiento. The Poets scored their first goal of the game with 2:03 left in the half. CSUEB would counter with a goal by Clare Baty with 1:29 left in the half. The Poets scored once more before the end of the quarter, but the Pioneers led 9-2 at halftime.
 
Andrist and Heredia would extend the Pioneers' lead to 11-2 with in the third quarter. Both teams would score a goal thereafter, with the Pioneers' goal coming off a Baty strike with 18 seconds left, before the end of the period as the Pioneers led 12-3 after three quarters.
 
Despite WC's best offensive output within a quarter during the match, tallies by Emily Clapham, Guisado, Logan Cherry, Caroline Vollmer and Tavaya Martinezcuello ensured the Pioneers kept distance as they finished the match winning 17-17.
  • Cal State East Bay outshot Whittier 32-21 and the Pioneers had three power play goals to the Poets' two.
  • In total, there were 13 different goal scorers for CSUEB.
  • With two assists each were Baty, Martinezcuello, Jarandson and Whitworth.

The Pioneers will wrap up their trip to Thousand Oaks on Saturday as they will take on the Cal Lutheran at 8:30 am and No. 11 Loyola Marymount at 12:30 p.m.
