Pioneer Water Polo Splits Saturday's Matches at Tina Finali Tournament

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal State East Bay women's basketball played two matches in the Tina Finali Tournament on Saturday. In the morning, the Pioneers defeated the host team, Cal Lutheran, 15-8, and lost Saturday's later match to No. 11 Loyola Marymount, 18-6. After four tournaments to start the 2024 season, Cal State East Bay is 5-7.

MATCH SUMMARIES

Goals in the first quarter by Lola Gill, Bailey Barlow, Hope Grantham, Luna Sarmiento and Alex Andrist contributed to a 5-2 score after the opening quarter. Six more goals were added to the Pioneer tally, with three of them by Grantham alone. CSUEB led 11-4 at halftime.
 
Although the second half was even at 4-4, the Pioneers finished with a 15-8 victory to start the day.
  • Grantham finished with five goals, a career-high during her two seasons with the Pioneers.
  • Andrist added three goals.
  • Grantham had three assists, as did Jordan Jarandson.

Over the course of the first quarter and more than three minutes into the second quarter, the Lions scored the first eight goals of the match. At the 4:37 mark of the second quarter, the Pioneers got on the scoreboard on a goal from Sarmiento. At halftime, LMU led 10-2.
 
Although the Pioneers found the net three times in the third, LMU doubled that tally to take a 16-5 lead into the fourth quarter. Cal State East Bay only had one more goal in the fourth quarter, which was scored by Alex Andrist. LMU finished with an 18-6 win.
  • Sarmiento finished with a hat trick, while Rachel Heredia scored two goals and an assist.
  • Loyola Marymount outshot Cal State East Bay 34-25 and the Lions had three more power play goals (4-1) than the Pioneers.

UP NEXT FOR CAL STATE EAST BAY

The final non-conference tournament for the Pioneers takes place March 1-2 from Whittier College in the Convergence Tournament. On Friday, the Pioneers face VMI and California Baptist, followed by a non-conference match on Saturday against McKendree, followed by a matchup against Azusa Pacific.
