FINAL RECAP: CSUEB Water Polo at Bronco Invitational

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Cal State East Bay women's water polo finished the 2024 Bronco Invitational at 1-3 overall. Following Saturday's overtime loss to Concordia University Irvine, the Pioneers lost later on Saturday to Brown, 12-5. And on Sunday, the Pioneers defeated Austin College in the morning, 15-7, but lost later in the day to No. 16 San Jose State, 13-6. After the weekend's tournament, the Pioneers are 3-5 overall.

MATCH SUMMARIES

Brown 12, Cal State East Bay 5 (Saturday)
After a 1-1 tie early in the first quarter, the Bears scored six of the next eight goals in the first half for a 7-3 halftime lead. The Pioneers were limited to only two goals in the second half, as Brown cruised to a 12-5 victory. CSUEB had five different goal scorers, including Rachel Heredia, Alex Andrist, Audrey Dexter, Luna Sarmiento and Caroline Vollmer. Lola Gill had two assists in the match.
 
Cal State East Bay 15, Austin College 7
The match was even at 2-2 in the first quarter, then the tie was broken on a goal from Andrist at the 1:29 mark of the quarter. Andrist's goal started a run of eight unanswered goals for the Pioneers to finish the first half ahead 10-2. Although the Roos outscored the Pioneers in the third quarter, 4-2, Cal State East Bay scored three in the fourth quarter en route to a 15-7 win. With three goals each were Hope Grantham, Elise Whitworth and Heredia. Dexter and Andrist added two goals apiece. In net, Marilyn Rodriguez-Garcia de Leon made 13 saves toward the win.

The first quarter ended even at 2-2, then the Pioneers took a 3-2 lead early in the second quarter on a goal from Grantham. Then, the Spartans scored the next seven goals, four of which were on the power play for a 9-3 lead at the 3:45 mark of the third quarter. The remainder of the game was even at 3-3, but the Pioneers were unable to make a run and SJSU went on to a 13-6 win. Heredia and Sarmiento found the net twice in the match.

UP NEXT FOR CAL STATE EAST BAY

The fourth straight tournament to start the 2024 season for the Pioneers is the Tina Finali Tournament on the campus of Cal Lutheran University on February 23-24. The first match for CSUEB on Friday is a contest against No. 22-t Cal State Northridge. Opening sprint from Samuelson Aquatic Center is set for 11:40 a.m. Later on Friday, at 5 p.m., the Pioneers take on Whitter from the Cal Lutheran campus.
