Pioneer Women's Basketball Snaps Skid with 66-60 Win Over CSUSB

HAYWARD, Calif. - Cal State East Bay women's basketball snapped a five game losing streak on Saturday evening with a 66-60 win over Cal State San Bernardino inside Pioneer Gymnasium.

GAME SUMMARY

Cal State East Bay started the game on 10-5 spurt capped by an Abigail Cooper jumper with 3:18 left in the quarter. The Pioneers led by as much as nine in the opening quarter, at 19-10, on a Brooke Donnelly layup with six seconds left in the first frame. 

The Coyotes started the second quarter on an 11-2 run, capped by an Isabel Arango jumper with 7:08 left in the half, to tie the game at 21-21. The Pioneers would gain their largest lead of the quarter at six, at 29-23, on a Josias Mickens jumper with 3:34 left in the half and eventually led 32-27  at halftime.

Cal State East Bay extended its lead to 42-32 in the third quarter, on a Lailah Carey layup with 5:57 left in the quarter. The Pioneers led by as much as 15 points in the quarter, ahead 48-33, on a Payton Sterk jumper at the 2:58 mark. The Pioneers led 48-39 after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, the Pioneers would hold the Coyotes at arms' length. The Pioneers would gain their largest lead of the ballgame at 16 points, at 62-46, on a Jaela Richardson layup with 4:22 left. The Coyotes went on a 14-1 run, capped by a Citlali Salazar layup with 16 seconds left, to trim the Pioneers' lead. The Pioneers hit three free throws in the final 16 seconds to seal the game at 66-60.

NOTABLE STATS
  • Sterk, who played 40 minutes, scored a team-high 20 points, going 7-for-14 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the free throw line. She made a pair of baskets from beyond the arc. 
  • Also reaching double figures in scoring for the Pioneers was Jaela Richardson with 14 points. 
  • Taylor Linzie was CSUEB's leading rebounder with 12 on Saturday.
  • Defensively, Linzie had two blocks and a steal.  
  • Destiny Jackson led the Coyotes in scoring with 12 points. 
  • The Pioneers shot 46 percent in field goals while the Broncos shot 35.5 from the floor. 
  • CSUEB had a 45-37 rebounding edge.

On Thursday, February 22, the Pioneers play their third home game in a row when they host (RV) Cal State San Marcos. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. from Pioneer Gynasium. On January 20, the Cougars defeated CSUEB, 78-65.
